Buyan: A Modern Display Font for Creative Projects

There’s something about opening a blank brand board that feels like standing at the edge of a creative leap. I was recently tasked with developing a visual identity for a boutique skincare brand, and the first step was choosing a font that could carry the tone of the entire project. Enter Buyan. From the moment I saw it, I knew this modern display font had the right kind of casual charm to fit the vibe.

A Friendly Face for Branding

Buyan is a display font with a personality that leans into approachability and warmth. Its curves are gentle, its strokes are soft, and there's an unmistakable sense of friendliness in every letter. It doesn’t scream for attention but instead invites it—like a well-worn notebook left open on a café table.

Testing it on a logo draft immediately showed how well it worked for short phrases or brand names. The character shapes have a subtle elegance that makes them feel both handmade and polished. It’s not overly ornate, so it avoids the risk of looking too whimsical or childish. This balance is exactly what you need when designing for a brand that wants to feel trustworthy yet relatable.

How Buyan Performs in Real Design Work

I tested Buyan across several branding elements. On a packaging mockup, it looked great as a label font. The rounded edges gave it a friendly, tactile feel that complemented the natural ingredients of the product. For a business card, it worked well as a headline font, paired with a clean sans-serif for body text. The contrast made the information easy to read while keeping the overall design cohesive.

On social media graphics, especially Instagram posts, Buyan added just the right amount of character without overwhelming the content. It stood out nicely against minimal backgrounds and even looked good in smaller sizes when used sparingly. However, I did notice that using it for long paragraphs or in very small sizes can reduce readability, which is something to keep in mind.

For web design, I placed it in a hero section and found that it performed well as a headline font. It didn’t interfere with the page’s loading speed, and since it’s a display font, it’s best reserved for emphasis rather than body text. In editorial design, it would be ideal for pull quotes or feature titles, where its unique style can draw the eye without distracting from the content.

Font Pairing and Stylistic Flexibility

One of the things I appreciate about Buyan is how easily it pairs with other fonts. When combined with a clean sans-serif like Helvetica Neue, it creates a nice contrast between the casual and professional. For a more artistic look, pairing it with a serif font such as Playfair Display adds a touch of sophistication without clashing.

If your project has a handcrafted feel, Buyan also works well alongside handwritten or script fonts. Just be mindful of the weight and spacing to ensure they complement each other. It’s versatile enough to work in both digital and print formats, making it a solid choice for commercial design assets.

When to Use and When to Avoid

Buyan shines as a display font, headline font, or accent typeface. It’s perfect for logos, brand tags, social media headers, packaging labels, and short-form content. But it’s not ideal for long paragraphs, body text, or formal corporate documents. Readability can suffer if it’s used in small sizes or dense blocks of text.

It’s also worth noting that while Buyan has a friendly and approachable style, it may not be suitable for all industries. If your brand needs to convey authority, precision, or formality, a more structured typeface might be better suited to the task.

Practical Tips Before Using Buyan in Client Work

Before committing to Buyan in final client work, take the time to test it in context. Try it on different surfaces—digital screens, printed materials, and even in motion. Check how it looks at various sizes and in different color contrasts. Also, make sure to review the font’s licensing agreement to ensure it’s appropriate for your intended use, whether it’s for websites, print-on-demand products, or merchandise.

Finally, remember that no font is one-size-fits-all. Buyan is a great option for projects that benefit from a warm, modern aesthetic, but always consider the specific needs of your brand before making a final decision.
